Back in 2013 Macallan announced their plans to construct a new distillery to replace their existing whisky production facility. Macallan was one of the original Speyside distilleries, dating from 1824 it was first housed in a converted farm building.
Over the years Macallan have expanded their operation considerably form two stills in its original wooden shed. Three additional stills were added 1954, increasing production to a total of five and in 1965 a new still house was constructed housing a further two stills.
During the 1970s expansion was rapid and the total number of stills reached 21.
The new distillery, designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, is a subterranean design based on the look of a Scottish broch or ancient roundhouse. It will house the new distillery with an expanded capacity of up to 15 million litres per year, up from the current 9 million.
Originally budgeted at £100 million the project cost has already risen to £120 million due to the complex nature of the design and location.
With the opening date for visitors now scheduled for summer 2018, the distillery has now commenced a rigorous series of test to prepare for the transition of production.
As reported by Scotchwhisky.com "The first mash was produced at the new facility last Thursday (9 November)" ... See MoreSee Less
